Minerals like calcium, iron, and copper are present in our water and can stick to our hair. This prevents moisture from getting into the hair shaft which can cause dry hair overtime. Using a water filter or a chelating cleanser can prevent this. Chelate at least 1-2 times monthly. Also, chelate every after every swim in a chlorinated pool and after using no-lye relaxers. Click here for a list of chelating cleansers: http://bit.ly/1lSonP3 PROTEIN & MOISTURE BALANCE Hair is made up of 90% protein and 10% water. Your hair regimen should reflect 80-90% of moisture and 10-20% protein. Here is a video that better explains this: http://bitly.com/moistureandprotein (In the video, I wasn’t clear with my wording when explaining protein treatments. For clarity, I suggest doing light protein treatments in between heavy protein treatments to keep strength in hair. Heavy protein treatments are intense and should be done every 6-8 weeks. Light protein treatment can be done every 1-2 weeks.) SEAMLESS COMBS Many combs are made of plastic and have a protruding line in between the teeth that can cause breakage when rubbed against the hair fiber. Using combs that are hand-made or that are made of rubber, bone, or tortoise shell are best. HERCULES SÄGEMANN SEAMLESS COMBS http://www.hotcombs.net/pages/HERCULE… WATER BASED PRODUCTS This goes for moisturizers, leave-ins, and conditioners. Water is the only true moisturizer. Oil does not moisturize the hair; it only helps to seal in the moisture from your water-based product. TRIMMING Click here for more information: http://bitly.com/howoftenshouldyoutrim PREPOO The hair fiber swells to accommodate excess water during the wash process and then it contracts and loses water during the drying process. This overtime can cause breakage which is called hygral fatigue. Applying 100% pure coconut to your hair before washing will prevent this. Coconut oil is best because of its ability to bind to the hair’s inner protein which reduces swelling from water. HUMECTANTS Humectant based products should only be used in moist weather. They should not be used in dry weather because it will pull the water/moisture from the hair itself. A good environment for hair to benefit from humectants is when the dew point is between 40°F to 60°F. Use this website to calculate the dew point http://www.dpcalc.org. 3 Wash Day Mistakes We Make with Deep Conditioning Natural Hair: 4c, 4b, 4a hair Friendly So deep conditioning natural hair has many benefits. Deep conditioning is extra helpful because its softening, strengthening, and enriching benefits are longer lasting than the common rinse out conditioner formula. However to get the most out of your deep conditioner the following mistakes need to cease: 1. Using a rinse out conditioner instead of a deep conditioner 2. Deep conditioning before shampooing. ….. Click play to get the rest I discuss a few mistakes but there are others that we do in the natural hair community. We can get it in due time. *Please keep in mind you are free to take care of your hair how you like. If you choose to still continue doing these same mistakes that is perfectly fine. You do what you feel works for your hair, my loves. However, there are some of us that do these mistakes and also suffer from hair issues such as dryness, breakage, shedding, knots. My videos shed light on what could be a contributor. Thats all. I just want to help people on there hair journey. Especially 4c hair.* Basics of Conditioning Conditioners help your hair mostly through adsorbing into its outer cuticle. Adsorption refers to ingredients attaching to the surface of the hair. However some deep conditioners have ingredients with a low molecular weight and are designed to absorb beneath the cuticle layer also. To successfully adsorb the elements onto or within the hair requires the attraction of a positive and a negative charge. Conditioners contain cationic surfactants within them that carry this positive charge while after cleansing the hair itself holds a negative charge. This attraction between the two allows for adsorption to occur. If we can understand deep conditioning natural hair and have a good routine for it, hair will thrive (if there is not medical reason it wont). YUMMM Fried Apple Pie Tacos – Learn how to make them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0qXjLt8qjI Watch more How to Get Dreads videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/510585-How-to-Wash-Dreads-and-Keep-Dreads-Clean-Get-Dreads So how to keep your dreads clean? Well, definitely the main way is to shampoo your dreads and your scalp regularly. For some that’s once every week and for others that’s once every two weeks, and for some others that’s about once a month, but either way you go you definitely want to be sure to keep the actual dreads clean and your scalp clean. One way is to use a non-residue shampoo. A lot of times to maintain dreads you’re using gel, you’re using wax, so when it’s time to shampoo your hair, you definitely want to use something that’s not going to add to that whole buildup, so you want to use something that’s going to get all of that buildup and all of that residue off. A great homemade way of coming up with a non-residue shampoo is to use simple baking soda. If you take four tablespoons of baking soda and put them in two cups of water, you can make your own non-residue cleanser and you just simply put it in a pitcher or a measuring cup and just pour it right over your head, just before you shampoo. Some people like to put it in and put a cap on it and leave it for about 20 minutes. That will cause all the dirt and everything from the scalp to come to the surface and then from there you can actually do your real shampoo. You can also use vinegar, whether you use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. They both work well and they both work great. You could definitely use a vinegar rinse, just before you shampoo also, and that will kind of help eliminate some of the odor and some of the itchiness off the scalp. You also within your baking soda and water combination, you can use distilled water with your baking soda. You can also use a tablespoon of tea tree or a tablespoon of rosemary, and those natural oils will kind of help fight whatever element is going on in your dreads at the time. Tea tree is great for your scalp. It’ll keep the scalp from being itchy and it also is a great cleanser, and the rosemary will fight mold and dandruff. So there are some great things that you have right there at your house that can keep your dreads nice and clean, and your scalp nice and healthy, but it’s definitely recommended that you shampoo your dreads and keep them clean.
