85% of Americans have hard water. Minerals like calcium, iron, and copper are present in our water and can stick to our hair. This prevents moisture from getting into the hair shaft which can cause dry hair overtime. Using a water filter or a chelating cleanser can prevent this. Chelate at least 1-2 times monthly. PROTEIN & MOISTURE BALANCE
Hair is made up of 90% protein and 10% water. Your hair regimen should reflect 80-90% of moisture and 10-20% protein. Here is a video that better explains this: http://bitly.com/moistureandprotein
(In the video, I wasn’t clear with my wording when explaining protein treatments. For clarity, I suggest doing light protein treatments in between heavy protein treatments to keep strength in hair. Heavy protein treatments are intense and should be done every 6-8 weeks. Light protein treatment can be done every 1-2 weeks.)
Many combs are made of plastic and have a protruding line in between the teeth that can cause breakage when rubbed against the hair fiber. Using combs that are hand-made or that are made of rubber, bone, or tortoise shell are best.

WATER BASED PRODUCTS
This goes for moisturizers, leave-ins, and conditioners. Water is the only true moisturizer. Oil does not moisturize the hair; it only helps to seal in the moisture from your water-based product.

The hair fiber swells to accommodate excess water during the wash process and then it contracts and loses water during the drying process. This overtime can cause breakage which is called hygral fatigue. Applying 100% pure coconut to your hair before washing will prevent this. Coconut oil is best because of its ability to bind to the hair’s inner protein which reduces swelling from water.
Humectant based products should only be used in moist weather. They should not be used in dry weather because it will pull the water/moisture from the hair itself. A good environment for hair to benefit from humectants is when the dew point is between 40°F to 60°F. Use this website to calculate the dew point http://www.dpcalc.org.

Using sulfate-free shampoos are way better to use than a shampoo with sulfate. But make sure that the sulfate-free shampoo is moisturizing because there are some sulfate-free shampoos that are drying.
UNDERSTANDING PRODUCT INGREDIENTS
Understand the ingredients that are in your hair products and their purpose. This will help you to understand how to use products and the best time to use them as well.
Looking at other people’s hair regimen is fine, but it’s important to have your own knowledge about your hair, the products that you use, and the different techniques/methods that can be used. Books like the Science of Black Hair or websites like Hairlista.com are great places to start.
